Iron Macchina has been one of the prime movers in the Philippine Custom Bike scene where they give so much value in small details to make their build a stand out for their client’s satisfaction. For our first featured local custom bike build this 2018, we decided to feature this BMW R1150 GS owned by Mr.Gren Guadamor.
Here’s a little throwback history of the BMW GS Series.
The Undisputed Adventure Bike
Manufactured by BMW Motorrad from 1999 through 2004, the GS Series an all purpose off-road/on-road BMW motorcycles line have been produced from 1980 when the R80G/S was launched, to the present day. The GS refers to either Gelände/Straße (German: off-road/road) or Gelände Sport. GS motorcycles can be distinguished from other BMW models by their longer travel suspension, an upright riding position, and larger front wheels – typically 19 to 21 inch.
The BMW R1150 Gained so much accolades in the global motorcycling scene and in 2004 the GS was the bike of choice by riding duo Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman in their 18,887-mile (30,396 km) ride from London to New York City, depicted in the book and TV series Long Way Round and a follow up TV series, R1150GS’s successor, the R1200GS Adventure the Long Way Down.
Máximo was born
This GS was brought to Iron Macchina by Mr. Gren Guadamor a member of BOSS Motorcycle Club. He intended to make his GS a stand out, a bike that will be different from other GS. He wanted his bike to sit a bit lower for his comfort. “While doing the planning, I had a good vision on what the bike can look like if we modify some of its other parts as well. So I called him up and gave him a few ideas on what i want the bike to look like and yes, he agreed,” said Symon, Iron Macchina’s founder.
“So given the chance, I took it as a challenge as this bike is the 3rd big displacement build for our team and we’re excited for this BMW project.”
Going through the details
CHASSIS – “The chassis was 100% fabricated. We went for sch 60/26mm high tencil tube steel (standard). We made it a dual layer chassis for stability, durability and style. Also to lessen the vibration coming the engine as this BMW has a 1150cc boxer engine. The dimension of the frame was based from the bikes existing lines. While considering the stance of the rider as well.”
“As you may notice the line of the chassis and front suspension rocker flowing fluidly together, and seat clearance is angled based from the riders comfort. The chassis also has a height adjustment giving option for the rider if he wants to get dirty on the track or ride it thru rough terrains. Lifting at least 2inch from its normal stance. Stainless steel perforated side covers for accent and powder coated for protection and fine finish. All welds are also based from original patterns. We replicated the welds from factory to ensure that it would still look original.”
FRONT END – “Dual 6″ day maker headlights vertically mounted is the perfect fit for this bike. Considering the size of its tank, i designed a cover that holds the 2 headlights together and made sure not to compromise the design and functionality of the lights. It made the bike look more meaner, muscular and explicit visibility.”
IMC TRACKER HANDLE BAR– “We replaced the handle bar with IMC production tracker bar with 7/8 diameter high tencil steel tube. Giving more stability and less vibration on handling.”
REAR END– equipped with LED integrated lights with exposed mount. Customer purchased rear tire hugger (aftermarket).
SEAT– Red stitched custom seat for combination and accent.
PAINT– Normally Iron Macchina use a k92 for more versatile usage and a top coat rough finish matte clear. We made it two toned Light gun metal and matte black.
“Working on this bike was a challenge. Considering that the bike was heavy, the wirings, detailing and concept. This was not a typical build for our team but it proves that we can. Keeping track with all our builds, this Scrambler BMW R1150 GS “Máximo” is definitely one of our favorite.”
